Though not the first porn film ever made, the one that made it socially acceptable to watch one. Young Linda Lovelace want to hear "bells and whistles" go off during sex, but often finds herself unsatisfied. After a visit to a doctor, played by Harry Reems (who was later jailed for his performance in the film), it is discovered that she has a clitoris in her throat. Hilarity ensues, among other things.
Director Gerard Damiano has stated that "it's not a very good movie", and one would have to agree with him. Scenes go in and out of focus, the sound is positively horrible, and the sex is hardly titillating. Some of the dialogue is amusing, but only a handful of the actors are attractive. See it only for the nostalgic value, but to learn more about the cultural aspect of the film, check out Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato's 2005 documentary "Inside Deep Throat."
*Notable Fact-Actress Thora Birch's mom is appears in the film as a naughty nurse.
"The Devil in Miss Jones" (1972, Gerard Damiano)
Damiano's follow-up to "Deep Throat" is much superior and far better quality. Georgina Spelvin plays Miss Jones, a lonely depressed virgin who commits suicide in her bathtub. Upon reaching her initial interview of whether she should go to heaven or hell, she is given a chance to live her life over, but this time "consumed with lust." She is given her own personal sex tutor (Harry Reems) and eventually becomes an addict. Her reintroduction into Hell might just be straight out of Sartre's "No Exit", but this time with a twist.
A somewhat depressing, if not psychologically intriguing film, "Devil" can be difficult to watch at times, but is nonetheless entertaining. Spelvin is average looking, realistic, and believable as an actress and performer. Still, it maintains its classic status because it plays very much like a regular narrative film, with a clever plotline and sex scenes that move the story along.
*Notable Fact- Lead actress Georgina Spelvin was 36 years old at the time of filming and this was her first lead in a porn film. She later went on to appear in over 100 more adult movies before retiring at the age of 47.
"Behind the Green Door" (1972, Jim and Artie Mitchell)
Along with "Deep Throat", this film was one of the first porn films widely distributed throughout the United States. Marilyn Chambers plays a young girl abducted by a group of men and forced to perform sex acts on stage in front of an audience. Strange scenarios involving an intricate trapeze set-up and a prolonged artsy-fartsy Technicolor erupting cock scene are all part of the fare here. Nuns, mimes, and even the audience members, who come in all shapes and sizes (no pun intended) all get in on the action. The camera work is shaky and amateurish at times, but instead of focusing on the actors' genitalia, they close in on their faces. The end result is sexy as hell.
Though the plotline may seem degrading to some, it is, in fact, pure fantasy. The film takes the viewer through the sexual liberation of a young woman, minus the cheesy soundtrack and phony moans and groans so prevalent in typical porno fare. It breaks taboos of interracial sex and sizeism, which are normally segregated in today's market under 'fetish' categories. One of my personal favorites.
*Notable Fact-Marilyn Chambers had posed for the cover of the Ivory Snow box before the production of the film. When Procter & Gamble found out about her appearance in the film, they pulled all boxes with her image off store shelves.
"Cafe Flesh" (1982, Stephen Sayadian)
Call it Sci-Fi porn, a post-apocalyptic nightmare, whatever you want, "Cafe Flesh" is a strange, but totally imaginative version of an adult film. In a post-nuclear society, the world has been divided into two types of people. 99% are Sex Negatives, able to feel everything except sexual pleasure, which makes them violently ill. The remaining 1% are Sex Positives, who are able to function sexually and are required by the government to perform sex acts on stage for the benefit of Sex Negatives. Cafe Flesh is one of the clubs where performances take place, and they truly are performances, with well-planned theatrics, song and dance numbers, and unique costumes, all culminating with a sex act. One number features a giant pencil head sticking it to a woman dressed as a secretary. Whoa. They reminded me a lot of the live sex shows I saw in Amsterdam a few years back.
Yes, this one does have a plot, but it is less important here than the actual showmanship, which is sexy, creative, and avant-garde. The camera constantly cuts back and forth to the zombified reactions of Sex Negatives leering from the audience, giving the film a somewhat cold feel, but also mocking the same audience that might be watching the film. This is porn for people who don't normally like porn.
*Notable Fact-The script was written by Jerry Stahl, whose life the film "Permanent Midnight" was based on.
"The Opening of Misty Beethoven" (1976, Henry Paris)
The holy grail of adult films. Hands down, the greatest adult film ever made. If you only see one pornographic film in your entire life, let it be this one.
*Notable Fact- The film's Director of Photography later went on to win an Oscar the following year.
